The temples of Khajuraho were built between 950 to 1050 AD. It witnessed one of the rich and creative period.
The Chandela rulers who adorned it with numerous tanks, scores of lofty temples of sculptural grace and architectural splendour. Eighty five temples were built to commemorate the victory of the wars during this period.
Today 22 of the remaining temples are divided in three groups.

The Khajuraho groups of temples are noted for functionally effective plans comprising of
A)an ardhamandapa, acting as entrance generally decorated with makara torana and kakshasana,
B) the mandap, as the hall with antarala leading to garbh graha or sanctum.
The bigger temples also have Mahamandap infront of the Ardhmandap. These temples also had four small shrines on the four corners. However these corner shrines can only be seen at Lakshman temple.
